How to choose a bank or credit union

Most people stay with a bank for years, so small differences in fees and service add up.

  • Deposit protection. Many countries have a deposit insurance scheme, such as the FDIC for banks and the NCUA for credit unions in the US. Confirm the institution is covered and know the limits.
  • Bank or app? Many money apps are not banks themselves; deposits are held at a partner bank. Find out which bank holds your money and how insurance applies.
  • Fees. Look for monthly maintenance fees and how to avoid them, overdraft and returned-payment fees, out-of-network ATM charges and foreign transaction fees.
  • Access to help. Check whether you can reach a person by phone, chat or in a branch, and at what hours.

Common problems and how to avoid them

Reviews of banks often describe accounts frozen for a security review, delayed access to funds after a large deposit, and disputes that take weeks to resolve. Keep a small balance at a second institution so a freeze does not leave you without money. Keep records of disputes in writing. If your bank does not resolve a complaint, banking regulators in many countries accept consumer complaints.

Phishing messages that copy bank branding are common. Your bank will not ask for your full password or one-time code by text or email. CandorRated company pages show who runs each website and how long the domain has existed, which helps spot lookalike sites. You can filter the list by country or city to find local institutions.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my account frozen?

Banks may restrict accounts while they review unusual activity or confirm your identity. Ask what documents they need and get a reference number.

Are online-only banks safe?

Safety depends on licensing and deposit protection, not on whether there are branches. Check both before moving your money.
