How to choose a fashion or accessories store

Buying clothes online means buying without trying on. The store you pick matters less for the item itself than for what happens when it does not fit, arrives late or looks different from the photos. Start with the policies, then the product.

Sizing and fit

Sizes are not standard across brands or countries. A medium from one label can fit like a large from another. Use the store's own size chart with your real measurements, and read reviews that mention fit, such as "runs small" or "long in the sleeve". If a store only lists letter sizes with no measurements, expect more guesswork.

Returns on clothing and shoes

  • Condition rules: most stores want items unworn with tags attached. Try things on indoors and keep the packaging.
  • Final-sale items: clearance, swimwear, earrings and intimate items are often non-returnable. Check before you add them to the bag.
  • Return costs: free delivery does not always mean free returns. Some stores deduct a label fee from your refund.
  • International returns: sending a parcel back overseas can cost more than the item.

Jewelry, watches and luxury pieces

For higher-value items, look for clear details on metal type, stone treatment and certification, and ask whether a watch comes with the maker's warranty or only a seller warranty. Resale and pre-owned luxury sellers should explain how they check authenticity and what happens if a piece turns out not to be genuine.

Problems shoppers report, and how to sidestep them

  • Photos that do not match the product: look for customer photos in reviews. Very polished images reused across many unrelated stores can be a warning sign.
  • Long, unexplained delivery times: some stores make items to order or ship from overseas warehouses. The delivery page should say so.
  • Refunds as store credit only: this is legal in some places but frustrating if you expected money back. Read the policy before you pay.
  • Hard-to-reach support: a store with only a contact form and no email or address can be slow to resolve disputes.

On each company page, CandorRated shows who appears to run the website, when its domain was registered and which contact details we found. You can also filter this category by country or city to find stores closer to you, which often means cheaper and simpler returns.

Frequently asked questions

Why do reviews of the same store disagree so much about quality?

Fashion stores often sell many product lines from different makers. One customer's dress may be well made while another's top is thin. Look for reviews that mention the specific type of item you want.

Can I return an item I have worn once?

Usually not. Most return policies require items to be unworn and unwashed, with tags on. Some stores allow exchanges for faulty items regardless, so check how they define a fault.

How do I avoid buying counterfeit designer goods?

Buy from the brand, an authorized stockist, or a resale platform that explains its authentication process. Prices far below retail on new designer items are a reason to pause.
