How to choose a car service company

Car services range from repair and tire shops to windshield replacement, fuel stations, diagnostic devices and vehicle history reports. Shops are local, so the branch matters as much as the brand. Filter this list by city to find nearby locations.

  • Written estimate. Ask for an estimate before work starts, and ask the shop to call you before doing anything extra.
  • Old parts. You can ask to see or keep the parts that were replaced.
  • Repair warranty. Ask how long parts and labor are guaranteed, and whether other branches honor it.
  • Insurance claims. For glass and body work, confirm the shop works with your insurer and what you will pay.
  • Diagnostic tools and reports. Code readers and history reports give useful information, but they do not replace a physical inspection.

Common complaints about repairs

Customers report upselling, repairs that did not fix the fault and invoices higher than the estimate. Get a second opinion for large repairs. Keep invoices showing the date and mileage. For app-based tools and subscriptions, check the renewal terms. CandorRated company pages show who appears to run each website, how long the domain has existed, the contact details we found and reviews from other drivers.

Frequently asked questions

Can a shop do extra work without asking?

Ask the shop at drop-off to get your approval before any extra work, and to note that on the order.

Do chain repair warranties work at every branch?

Some do. Franchise branches may differ, so ask.
