What to check before you use a claims service

Claims services find settlements, refunds or unclaimed funds you may be owed and offer to file for you. Some charge a fee or keep a percentage. Much of the same work can often be done yourself.

  • Official sources. Class action settlements are run by a settlement administrator named in the court-approved notice. Filing on the official settlement website is free.
  • Unclaimed property. In the US, state unclaimed property programs let you search and claim at no cost. Other countries have their own official schemes.
  • Fees. If you use a service, get the fee or percentage in writing before signing, and ask when it is charged.
  • Your data. Claim forms ask for addresses, purchase history and sometimes ID. Check how the service stores and shares it.

Common problems and how to avoid them

Payments from settlements can take months or years, because courts must approve the settlement and appeals can delay payouts. A service cannot speed that up. Payout amounts also depend on how many people claim, so early estimates can change.

Scammers send fake settlement notices that ask for bank details or a processing fee. Real settlement administrators do not charge you to receive money. Check the web address against the notice or the court record before entering details.

CandorRated shows who runs each website, how long its domain has existed and what contact details were found, which helps tell an established service from a new lookalike.
