What to check before ordering from a department or discount store

Department stores sell many brands under one roof, while discount and closeout retailers sell overstock, past-season items and bulk goods at lower prices. Both can be good value, but their policies often differ by product type.

  • Returns by category: the same store may allow returns on clothing but not on mattresses, electronics or clearance items.
  • Clearance and final sale: deep discounts often mean no returns. Check the product page for a final-sale label.
  • Daily deals: limited-time offers can sell refurbished or older models. The listing should say which.
  • TV and phone shopping: check installment plans, shipping and handling charges, and the return window before you order.
  • In-store vs online: online-only prices and returns rules may differ from the physical store.

Where orders tend to go wrong

Reviews often mention split shipments arriving on different days, items canceled after payment because stock ran out, and refunds that take several billing cycles. Keep your order confirmation and track each parcel separately. If a "compare at" price looks high, treat it as the seller's own reference, not proof of a saving.

Each store's CandorRated page lists who seems to operate its website, the domain's registration date and any customer service contacts we located. Use the country and city filters to find stores with branches near you, which can make returns easier.

Frequently asked questions

Can I return an online order to a physical store?

Many chains allow it, but not for every item. Check the returns page for in-store return options.

Why was my order canceled after I paid?

Stock errors and pricing mistakes are common reasons. The store should refund you in full; ask for the timeline in writing.
