5 Top Outdoor & Camping Companies

What to check before you buy outdoor gear

Outdoor gear is often used far from help, so a product that fails matters more than usual. Look past the marketing to the specifications that matter for your trip.

• Ratings and specs: sleeping bag temperature ratings, waterproof ratings and tent weights are measured in different ways by different brands. Read how the figure was tested.
• Warranty: some outdoor brands offer long warranties; others only cover defects for a short time. Check whether the retailer or the manufacturer handles claims.
• Shipping limits: fuel canisters, ammunition and some knives can face shipping restrictions depending on where you live.
• Returns: ask whether gear can be returned after it has been used outdoors.

Common problems and how to avoid them

Gear that arrives too late for a planned trip, and returns refused because an item was used, are frequent complaints. Order well ahead and test equipment at home first: pitch the tent, light the stove outside, wear the boots indoors.

Surplus and closeout retailers can have low prices, but stock moves quickly and items may be older models. Check the product description for condition and model year.
