About Yelp

Yelp is an American online platform where people search for local businesses, such as restaurants, salons, contractors and shops, and read or write reviews about them. Businesses can claim their pages, respond to reviewers and buy advertising on the platform. Yelp was founded in 2004 and is headquartered at 140 New Montgomery Street in San Francisco. The company is publicly listed under the ticker YELP and has a Wikipedia entry. Its domain was registered in 2003. When reading reviews on any platform, look at the spread of ratings and the dates, not only the average score. Detailed reviews that describe a specific visit tend to be more useful than short, very positive or very negative ones. Review platforms often filter or hide some reviews automatically, so the visible count may not be everything that was written. If you run a business, read the platform's rules on asking customers for reviews, as some platforms prohibit it, and check what any advertising package includes before signing up.
