How to choose a travel company or booking site

Travel bookings are usually paid for weeks or months in advance, and plans change. The real test of a travel company is what happens when a flight is canceled, a hotel is overbooked or you need to change a date. Read the rules before you look at the price.

Booking direct or through a third party

Online travel agencies and comparison sites can show useful prices, but when you book through one, changes and refunds often have to go through that agency rather than the airline or hotel. That can add a step, and sometimes a fee, when something goes wrong. Check who the booking is actually with before you pay. On a booking site's CandorRated page you can see the company that seems to operate it, the domain's registration age and any phone or email for support, which matters when you are abroad and need help quickly.

Read the fare and rate rules

  • Refundable vs non-refundable: many cheap fares only allow a credit or voucher, not money back.
  • Baggage and seat fees: low headline fares can exclude checked bags, cabin bags or seat selection.
  • Hotel extras: some hotels add resort, city or service charges at check-in. The total should be shown before booking.
  • Car rental: look at the deposit hold, fuel policy, mileage limits, insurance excess and fees for young or additional drivers.
  • Cruises and tours: check what is included, such as drinks, excursions and gratuities, and the cancellation schedule.

Visas and travel documents

Many governments run official online visa and travel authorization services. Some private websites offer to submit the same application for an extra fee. That can be legal, but you should know you are paying a middleman. Check the official government site first.

Problems travelers report most

  • Slow refunds after cancellations: keep every email and booking reference, and ask in writing.
  • Name mismatches: the name on a ticket must match your passport. Corrections can be costly.
  • Car rental damage claims: photograph the vehicle at pickup and return, including the fuel gauge and mileage.
  • Fake booking pages: lookalike sites can imitate airlines or hotels. Check the domain before entering card details.

Filter this category by country or city to find local tour operators and agencies, or providers based in your home country.

Frequently asked questions

Am I entitled to compensation if my flight is delayed?

Some countries and regions have passenger rights rules that cover delays and cancellations. Check the rules that apply to your route and airline.

Is it cheaper to book directly with the hotel?

Sometimes, and booking direct can make changes simpler. Compare the full price, including taxes and fees, and the cancellation terms on both.

Should I buy travel insurance?

Many travelers do, especially for expensive or non-refundable trips. Read what it covers for cancellations, medical costs and lost luggage.
