How to pick software or an online service

Software rarely fails in a dramatic way. More often the trouble is a renewal you did not expect, a feature locked behind a higher plan, or an account you cannot close.

Pricing, trials and renewals

  • Introductory prices: many plans, especially hosting and domain plans, renew at a higher rate after the first term. Look for the renewal price, not only the sign-up price.
  • Free trials: note whether a card is required and set a reminder before the trial converts into a paid plan.
  • Annual billing: paying yearly is cheaper, but check whether unused months are refundable if you cancel early.
  • How to cancel: some services allow cancelling in a click; others require a chat or email. Reviews often reveal which.

Your data

Read the privacy policy for what is collected, whether it is shared or sold, and how to delete your account. For AI tools, check whether your inputs may be used to train models and whether you can opt out. For people-search and lookup sites, check whether there is a clear way to request removal of your own record. If you rely on a service for your work, make sure you can export your files in a usable format.

Downloads and security tools

Software from unofficial download sites can come bundled with adware or worse. Prefer the developer's own site or an official app store. With VPNs and security software, look for a named company behind the product and a published policy on logging, rather than marketing claims alone.

Common problems and how to avoid them

  • Charges after cancelling: keep the cancellation confirmation email or a screenshot. It is your evidence if a charge appears later.
  • Support that never replies: check whether the company lists an email, a phone number or an address. CandorRated company pages show the contact details we found and who appears to run the website.
  • Features that change after you pay: plans are often reshuffled. Save a copy of what your plan included when you bought it.
  • Apps that ask for too many permissions: a flashlight app has no reason to read your contacts. Deny what it does not need.

Domain age is a useful signal in this category: a tool launched last month may be fine, but it has less history than one that has been online for years. You can also filter companies here by country if you want a provider that follows your local data rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund on a software subscription?

It depends on the provider's terms and the consumer rules where you live. Many offer a short refund window after purchase or renewal. Ask quickly and in writing.

Are free apps really free?

Many are paid for by advertising, data collection or in-app purchases. The privacy policy and the app store listing usually say which.

How do I remove my details from a people-search site?

Look for an opt-out or removal page on that site. You may need to repeat the process on each site separately, since they often share data sources.
